gently pry up the lip of the battery well

after removing the joystick button and the two screws (see next picture) the face slides off. be careful not to get fingerprints all over the inside of the lcd lens or the surface of the lcd itself like i did. it's a pain getting clean again.

this one's too fuzzy to see but it's supposed to demonstrate that the ribbon connector's retaining clip flips up, away from the board. don't try to push it laterally away from the connector or you may break it!
